About Me

About

I have been teaching singing full time for eleven years, having studied privately with Howard Milner in Birmingham and London, Jeffrey Talbot in London, and latterly Neil Howlett in Lincolnshire. Originally a choral singer, I sang with Ex Cathedra, Birmingham Baroque, The Chamberlain Consort, and was a choral scholar at St Alban and St Patrick Church in Birmingham whilst a student.

I was the conductor of the University Chamber Choir and the University Symphonic Wind Orchestra. I moved into opera and oratorio solo singing in 2000 and added lots of music theatre performing. In recent years, although concentrating mainly in the area of teaching, I have been able to perform in productions of Das Rheingold and La Traviata for Secret Opera, Turn of the Screw and Roberto Devereux for Opera Seria, in addition to performing for several choral societies as soloist. I originally trained as a violinist, and also play piano and saxophone. In addition to my vocal teaching and performing, I have been a member of Komposit, a composition workshop run for young composers in the East Midlands. I worked previously as Area Leader for Sing Up in Lincolnshire, through soundLINCS.

Music Qualifications & Achievements:

I have just completed the PGCert component of an MA in Voice Pedagogy. Prior to this, my music education has been independent of the college. I am a full member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (FISM).

I received tuition from Colin for 2 years to help with technique for pop backing vocals. Colin is a fantastic communicator and really helped me to develop an awareness of the sensations of using the voice that then reduced my dependency upon having a good monitor mix in a loud band situation.

Lessons were very enjoyable and when family/budget constraints allow I’ll be contacting Colin again to correct the bad habits I’ve formed since stopping lessons! Although Colin is a classical singer I’d highly recommend him to anyone doing pop or rock music too.

My 12 year old son received tuition from Colin for well over a year to improve his singing and breathing techniques. Colin is a brilliant communicator with children, showed immense patience and understanding, always helping to achieve the optimum results in a relaxed, happy environment. I would whole heatedly recommend Colin to anyone who is considering improving their vocal talents.
