Hi! My name is James Sykes and I provide professional Drum lessons to all students of any age or ability in the Nottingham area.
I have been playing and teaching the drums for a long time now, and in this time I have been fortunate enough to have worked with many different students from all walks of life. I have been able to work with students in both Secondary Schools and Colleges in order to provide large group lessons as well as private one to one lessons.
I believe I am a friendly and professional teacher and take pride in offering relaxed but informative lessons. Having been a music student myself in the past, I understand how important having a comfortable learning environment is, and I tend to find people actually retain more information and learn best this way.

I believe all people should experience the benefits of playing the drums or just any instrument in general. I don't feel it's really ever too early or too late to give any instrument a try, especially the drums. As such I offer lessons to all students from the ages 6+ all the way through to retirees who are looking to learn a new skill.
Through my experience working in both public schools and in a private setting I understand that adult learners will learn differently to younger students. I will always tailor every lesson to suit the needs of the individual student. I can offer very flexible teaching hours which can be taken at your own convenience, which makes booking and arranging lessons very straight forward.
Lessons are pay-as-you-go, weekly, fortnightly or as suits you.
My lessons are suitable for students of any skill level. No worries whether you have never played the drums before or you have been playing for years, my lessons are suitable for all.
Introduction to Drums, Basic Rhythms, Simple Exercises,
I currently hold a BA Hons in popular music from the University of Northampton, a Grade 8 Drumming certificate, an A level in music as well as a vast amount of touring and real world experience. For around the last 4 years I have been working with and supporting students with learning difficulties, alongside a position as a Lead Tutor for a Leicester-based music charity.
I believe that having continuous live experience performing as a member of jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop and rock groups (amongst others) has greatly helped me push my own limits as a performer and allowed me to grow in to a higher quality musician. Having such a wide range of styles under my belt means I can tailor lessons to all individuals and to make each session as fun and interesting as I can.
As well as offering practical tuition helping you physically become a better drum player, I also offer musical theory lessons allowing you to expand and grow your knowledge as an all round musician. Together we will create a plan that identifies your weak areas and allows you to grow and expand on them in the best way possible while keeping you motivated and driven.

As well as offering standard drum tuition to help you improve I also offer different drum exam preparation if this is something you are interested in. The most popular syllabus of choice is usually the Rock school graded exams however there are a wide range of other options out there that we can look at.
I take pride in making sure that every student gets a personal and unique experience when taking lessons with me. I will always tailor the lessons to ensure that you are learning at a pace that is comfortable for you to ensure you don't feel too pressured. I find keeping the lessons relaxed is the best way to maintain steady and consistent progress.
The lessons provided are suitable and available to a wide range of ages. I tend to find most students take a 60 minute lesson with me each week to ensure the most consistent and steady progress. However, I would recommend 30 minute lessons for younger students as I find this help keeps their attention spans.

The Drum and Guitar Center, is located 8 Priory Queensway, Birmingham, West Midlands, B4 6BS and here they sell a wide range of instruments including drum kits. They have a great selection here that suit all budgets and prices ranges.
The Music Inn, is located on 28-34 Alfreton Rd, Nottingham NG7 3NG. The Music Inn is a fantastic local music store, selling a huge variety of instruments including drums. What makes The Music Inn special is that they actually have a repair and setup service meaning too.
I am here to help you rapidly grow and progress in to the drummer you have always dreamed of. Together we will study and learn songs by your favorite artists and the styles that you love the most to ensure a fun but productive learning environment.

Lessons are £14 for half an hours tuition or £25 for an hours tuition.
Lessons can take place at my home address in Serlby Rise, Nottingham, NG3 2LS (full address would be provided upon booking your first lesson).
I teach students of all ages 6+.
No you can attend lessons as and when you like. I would recommend one hour a week for the most consistent progress.
Any lessons cancelled within 48 hours can still be charged for. I am happy to reschedule cancelled lessons where possible.
