My Mission

Lessons Tailored To You

I grew up listening to my dad’s eclectic collection of music containing anything from Black Sabbath, George Duke, Thin Lizzy, Steely Dan, Charles Mingus and many more. Dave Gilmour/Pink Floyd was a huge influence on me wanting to become a guitar player. I was bought my first guitar at age 10 and loved it! I have 12 years of gigging experience in various different styles including jazz, rock, metal, funk and soul. Metal was my first experience of live performance.

Well, we have options to suit everyone. You can attend weekly lessons here in West Yorkshire, easily accessible by bus routes, or if you'd prefer, we also offer online lessons. As we go through the lessons, covering everything from rhythm to sheet music to song itself, I'll always encourage you to choose songs that you love. After all, the best way to learn is by doing something you enjoy, right?

Advice for New Students

Turning Chords into Melody: Your First Guitar Lesson

Laying the Foundations of Guitar Playing: Chords and Rhythm

As an experienced guitar tutor, I firmly believe that understanding chords is one of the first steps towards turning notes into melodies. In your first lesson, we'll dive into the basics of guitar playing, focusing on a few essential chords. As we progress through the guitar lessons here in Leeds, or online if you prefer, you'll learn how to transition smoothly between these chords, creating your first simple melodies. Remember, every great guitarist started playing their first chords at some point, just like you're about to do.

I've taught guitar lessons for years, and I've seen firsthand how important it is to enjoy what you're playing. So, whether you're a fan of classic rock, jazz, or even classical music, I'll tailor our guitar lessons together to include your favourite songs. That way, you'll be more motivated to practice and improve.

Understanding Your Instrument: From Tuning to Strumming

I've always found that getting to know your own guitar, whether it's an acoustic or an an electric guitar, is a vital part of the learning process. Understanding how to tune your instrument can help you maintain the sound quality of your guitar, while proper strumming techniques can enhance your ability to play different songs.

Attending lessons with an expert guitar teacher like me, whether in West Yorkshire or online, will ensure you get the guidance and feedback you need to make solid progress. In our half-hour or one-hour lessons, I'll guide you through music theory basics, teach you how to read sheet music, and share my own experiences from years of teaching at Guitar Lessons Leeds.

Learning to play the guitar isn't just about the instrument; it's about expressing yourself through music. So, whether you're keen on becoming a master of the guitar, or you're excited about exploring the world of jazz guitar, I'm here to help you reach your goals. Let's start this musical journey together, and soon, you'll be playing your favourite songs with confidence. You've started playing guitar today, and who knows, you may even be teaching your own students in Leeds one day!

Choosing Your Guitar Tutor: What to Look for in a Private Teacher

Key Qualities to Look for in a Guitar Tutor

When on the hunt for the perfect guitar tutor, there are a few key qualities I'd suggest you keep an eye out for. First off, look for someone who's a professional guitar teacher and has a music background - don't be afraid to ask about their qualifications and experience. An guitar tutor who has taught in places like Leeds College, for instance, is a good sign.

Their teaching style should focus on your needs as a student. Whether you're taking up the acoustic or electric guitar, beginner lessons should cover the basics while still making room for your favourite classic songs. This makes the lessons more enjoyable! Also, check out if they offer based music lessons in Leeds or if they're primarily online.

The Importance of a Community and Encouraging Environment

The best guitar lessons create a supportive community. Look for guitar tutors who encourage their students to interact, share experiences, and learn from one another. It's important to feel like you're part of a musical journey, not just attending lessons.

Also, a great tutor recognises that teaching isn't just about the technical side of playing the guitar. It's about helping you, as a beginner, express yourself through your chosen musical instrument, helping you master the chords and eventually play the songs that you love. They should be able to guide you, whether you're aiming to strum away at classic songs or explore the world of piano in addition to your guitar lessons in Leeds.

Remember, finding the perfect music tutor, can take some time, and you might need to attend lessons with more than one teacher to find your ideal fit. But it's all part of your musical journey. Picture yourself in the future, confidently playing your favourite songs in front of your friends, or even teaching your own students in Leeds one day. Keep that image in mind as you pursue your guitar lessons and you'll find the journey extremely rewarding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ah, the million-dollar question (or should we say, the ten-pound question)! Guitar lesson prices can vary widely based on several factors, including the tutor's experience, the length of the lesson, whether it's one-on-one or group-based, and your location. On average, you might expect to pay between £15 and £40 per hour for a private lesson in the UK.

In the UK, the cost of a guitar lesson can vary. If you're working with a highly experienced tutor in a city like London, you might pay on the higher end, possibly £50 per hour. In smaller towns or for less experienced tutors, you might find lessons for as low as £10 per hour. Remember, it's important to balance cost with the quality of instruction you're receiving.

Absolutely, they are! Here's the neat thing about 30-minute lessons—they're short and sweet, but can be wildly effective, especially for beginners or those with busy schedules. These bite-sized lessons can maintain your focus, avoid information overload, and keep your enthusiasm burning. But for more advanced players wanting to delve into intricate techniques, hour-long sessions might be more beneficial.

One-to-one guitar lessons are typically more expensive than group lessons, simply because you're getting the tutor's undivided attention. These individualised lessons can range from £15 to £50 per hour, depending on the tutor's expertise and location. While they're a bit of an investment, the personalised instruction and feedback you'll receive can be invaluable for your guitar journey.

Consistency is key. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of practice per day. Regular, shorter sessions tend to be more effective than occasional long ones. However, the most important thing is to find a practice routine that works for your schedule and keeps you motivated.
