The Oxford & Cambridge Singing School

Summer Course – Oxford:

We are delighted to announce that the Oxford & Cambridge Singing School summer course is being held at Merton College, Oxford and is taking place between the 26th & 28th July. The O&C SS offers high quality holiday courses for musical children aged 7-13.

The singing school was created to provide children with the opportunity to sing great classical music to a high standard in a relaxed and fun environment and to develop their confidence and ability in singing and performing. The course director is Dr Edward Wickham, Music Fellow and Director of Music at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where he founded the first College-based children’s girls choir in the country and whose head chorister went on to win the ‘BBC Head Chorister of the Year’ award in 2015.

Our theme for our summer course is early 19th Romantic music; focusing on Mendelssohn and Schubert. The repertoire will include Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ and Mendelssohn’s ‘O for the Wings of a Dove’ and ‘I waited for the Lord’, as well as some more modern pieces.

Testimonials:

“How lucky are these young singers. They are brilliantly taught and have a lot of fun, and you will be amazed at what they achieve in just a few days – and all in the most beautiful surroundings.” – Bob Chilcott – composer and parent of past attendee.

“I loved every moment of the course. I sang ‘Panis Angelicus’, one of the pieces I learnt on your course as a solo at our school concert, and the Head of Music asked if I could sing it again at the school assembly in front of the whole school. Thank you….” – Chloe – aged 11.

“Thank you for a wonderful week. My son thought it was fantastic, he loved the range of music and the coaches are all excellent. The week vastly increased his understanding of singing, reading choral music and performance – he has been wonderfully inspired!”

“My son loved every minute of it – the teachers, the location, the music and even the music theory!”

Bursaries:

There are two bursary places available on each course. To apply the parent will need to write to Samantha Wickham (oxbridgess@gmail.com), summarising their financial situation. We keep these for our own records and will be kept private and confidential. Children applying for these will typically be on free school meals from year 3/Key Stage 2 and upwards.
