My Mission

Easy To Understand Tuition

I'm a very approachable person and I pride myself on providing high quality lessons that are easy to understand for all. Sometimes I have beginner students who want to start with the basics but other times I teach students who are experienced players who want to expand their knowledge or fix any bad habits. Regardless of which side you're on, I will always make sure to build my lessons around your playing level and personal goals.

In terms of what you'll learn during our lessons changes depending on who the learner is. I like to make sure I talk to all of my students about what they want to achieve before we even start learning. I like to make sure we are both together with the direction that you want to learn in.

My Lessons

All Levels Taught

I've been teaching for many years and during this time, I've taught students of all ages and from all playing backgrounds. I love to teach jazz but can also teach with a more classical angle or even help you learn well known pop and rock songs that you're interested in. I like to make sure my students let me know the styles that they love before we even start our lesson course.

I welcome both beginner and advanced players to learn with me. My lessons will be at a pace that you feel comfortable with and I love to make sure that we have a clear view of what we are going to learn together. Learning the Saxophone isn't easy and I fully understand that and this is why we will always take a calm and informative approach to learning to play the Saxophone.

My Experience as a Teacher

I am a composer, saxophonist and pianist, currently studying a Masters of Music Composition for Film and Television at the University of Bristol. I have a degree in music composition from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. I currently play in an electro swing band and two orchestras. When I was in Sydney, I performed in an orchestra, an improv group and a saxophone quartet. At times, my own compositions were performed with these groups.

I absolutely love teaching and sharing my passion for music. I have taught for 7 years doing both privately and at music schools. During this time I have taught private and group lessons, directed and organised music camps, written curriculum, designed games and trained other teachers.

Training new teachers was a wonderful experience that gave me insight into a myriad of teaching methods. I enjoy helping students to find and reach their individual goals. Each student is different and should be taught in different ways.

More About My Lessons

I teach a range of styles for all levels, including improv, classical and jazz. My own musical interests are diverse, allowing me to provide recommendations across all genres, and to introduce students to new genres in ways that will be interesting to them. Whether students are looking to progress through exams, challenge themselves in new styles or simply play the music they love, lessons are catered for each individual student.

I spend the first lesson getting to know the student, along with their own goals, skills and interests. I am then able to make a programme that suits the student which could include games, technical work, studies and of course music by composers that they will love.

COVID brought with it the opportunity to teach online, and while this created many challenges, it also showed the flexibility and range of music teaching. Online lessons are similar but different, allowing for easy sharing of music and new ways to learn. Outside of teaching, my passion is composition, which is something that I love to incorporate into my lessons. Composition can provide beautiful, creative exercises for the mind that positively impact the way in which one practises and performs. It can also allow students to gain a greater understanding of the theory behind the music they are playing, as well as increasing confidence. I offer lessons both online and in person, or with a mixture of those two mediums. I look forward to guiding more students towards their musical goals, and to help them find new passions in music.

Music Shops in Bristol

Bristol has a good range of music shops in the local area but here are a few that I would recommend to woodwind and brass players.

Headwind Music, Headwind music is the best place to go if you want to pick up a new Saxophone or get a repair done. You can find them at 19 Zetland Rd, Redland, Bristol BS6 7AH.

Trevor Jones, is a great place that specialises in brass instruments and repairs. They always have very friendly staff and the shop is locally run. You can find them at 13 Christmas Steps, Bristol BS1 5BS.
