What my students say

& why they love my singing lessons

Nichola Pemberton

'Nel is a great singing teacher. In all my lessons she’s met me exactly where I am, be it tired, over-excited or completely without a brain. She always knows great warm-ups and activities to get us going and has always been able to answer any question I’ve ever had. In my lessons we’ve done improvisation activities, work on technique and guidance for songs of various styles. She is always encouraging. Thanks, Nel!'

'Nel has been coaching my 9-year-old son for a couple of months. Whilst full of enthusiasm, he was somewhat lacking in the execution. Thanks to Nel, his singing has already improved considerably. However, more importantly, he loves his lessons and always has a great time. Nel is heaps of fun and super engaging. So much so, I have decided to sign up for lessons too!'

About Your New
Singing Teacher

Friendly, helpful and focused on helping you to master your singing technique.

I have been involved in music for many years through performance study and teaching. I graduated with a degree in Jazz Performance and have since had experience teaching both individual students and leading workshops.

I come from a varied musical background and benefited from exposure to Classical, Musical Theatre, Jazz and Contemporary music. I believe students should learn to sing songs they love from a number of genres. This will help you learn all the different techniques and develop your vocal talent.

Whilst having fun is a focus of my lessons, it is also important to focus on the fine details of singing: making sure you take care of your voice with healthy technique. Every student will need attention in different areas of their singing, and I will be able to identify where you can get better and tailor your lessons to suit your needs.

As your teacher, my ultimate goal is to see you enjoying your singing and achieving whatever goals you set yourself. Whether this be to learn to sing casually, to perfect that karaoke performance or to learn to sing at a professional/grade standard, I am excited to play a part in your journey.

Local Singing Teacher Tips:

Music Shops in Leeds:

Leeds is a great city for musicians as we're spoilt for choice in the number of reputable music shops. There are a good few that are worth looking at, but here's a short list of some of the most well known:

Dawsons Music Leeds is a great stop for any musician looking for instruments or equipment. They have an impressive store full of kit, including singing studio equipment (digital recorders, microphones, headphones) and PA systems (speakers, mixers and other accessories). The shop is located at 113 Vicar Lane, Leeds, LS1 6PJ.

Located at 13 Eastgate, LS2 7LY, Hobgoblin Music Leeds is a local branch of another established national brand and is an easy place to find good quality equipment. They stock a healthy selection of microphones and various amplification equipment & accessories.

PMT Leeds have a number of microphones and processors listed on their website at a wide range of prices. They have cheaper items ideal for beginners all the way up to studio quality microphones and sound processors, allowing you to pick and choose to find the sound you're looking for. You can find them at 9 Kirkstall Road, LS3 1LH.

Music Courses in Leeds:

Having studied areas of music and performance myself, I believe a course in music is a fantastic way of turning your passion into a career. Leeds has a number of high-quality institutions that offer various music programmes:

The University of Leeds offers courses in music at undergraduate, masters and PhD level, and is an All-Steinway institution for music: an award that recognises support for students with the highest quality equipment. They also offer combined honours degrees for those wanting to study music and develop other areas of interest at the same time.

Leeds College of Music offer both higher and further education courses in music in short and long course formats. This means LCM is accessible for students as young as 16, and allows you to pick the type of course that you feel is right for you: whether this be evening classes or a short course that develops a specific area of interest, or a full music qualification that gives you a broad range of knowledge and experience.

Leeds Art University offers a course in popular music performance, which is a three-year course that provides students with collaborative performance opportunities with other students across a range of disciplines, with a focus on live performance skills through workshops and 1-to-1 tuition.
