Teacher's Biography:

I graduated from Trinity College of Music in 2007 and I have since then been performing in various bands, which has led to one MOBO Award as well as touring around the whole of Europe. I have released 3 albums of my own and I was recently awarded 'Vocalist of the year-2016' at The Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

I love teaching on the side of my performance career and I have been doing so for the last 10 years. I am currently the Jazz/Pop Vocal Tutor at Brunel University and I have also started my own 'platform' for aspiring singers who are interested in Jazz and Folk music. This platform is called 'Beyond Vocals' and from here I organise a variety of different workshops, masterclasses and summer courses abroad.

I mainly teach on an intermediate-advanced level but happy to take on beginners. Anyone who is interested in learning about their voice is welcome!

What I am passionate about, in terms of teaching singing, is exploring singers own and unique personal sound and way of expression. Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced singer I believe this should always be the main focus alongside building up a solid vocal technique.

I encourage people to challenge themselves and to go outside of their comfort zone with the aim to grow in confidence and feeling free in their singing.

"I love working with Emilia. I'm a professional opera singer but I recently developed an interest in singing jazz. Emilia has such a warm, giving and knowledgable approach. She gives me so much inspiration. She instantly put me at my ease (improvising and singing in a far more flexible style from the point of view of a classical singer is scary!) and she is brilliant at listening – both to what I have to say and to the way that I sing. Her love of jazz, of voices, and of singing and music, shines through. It is, of course, a wonderful bonus to get to hear her sublime singing and unique interpretation of each song! I'm very much looking forward to attending her Summer Course in Izola this year." -Elizabeth Cragg, Professional Opera singer.

"I have learnt about things I wasn't expecting to learn about. The warmth of the environment encouraged me to push myself to try new things. It has more than met my expectations." - Nell Greco - Professional Singer/Freelance Copywriter

"…the advice given is presented in a very constructive and helpful way, which I really feel can help me improve…" - Nadiah - Emergency Physician/Professional Singer

1 review for Emilia Martensson

The course took me from amateur to being able to perform in a professional manner, in less than a week. Emilia was professional, creative and incredibly supportive of all her students on the course, getting to know each of us individually and developing us in our own direction. Best thing I’ve ever done in my life.
