Teacher's Biography:

I am a professional electric bass and double bass player, and have performed and recorded in a wide variety of venues across the UK, Europe and USA. I teach at three award-winning and prestigious academic institutions: Based at Portsmouth Naval Base, I am the Professor of Bass Guitar at the Royal Marines Band Service, quoted as being the "world’s most versatile military music organisation". I am also Lecturer of Developing the Musician at Solent University (Southampton), recently awarded five stars by QS World University Rankings for teaching and inclusivity.

In Addition, I teach double bass and bass guitar in Winchester at the "stupendously successful" Peter Symonds College; home of the Hampshire Specialist Music Course. Privately, I teach electric bass guitar and double bass students on a one-to-one basis from my studio based between Southampton and Winchester; within walking distance of a train station and bus route, and just minutes away from the M3 and M27 motorways. While I specialise in teaching advancing (Grade 8 +) and professional musicians, I am able to take on a select number of beginners and intermediate players each year if I have space.

Testimonials:

"Greg is an inspirational bass teacher. I have had lessons on several instruments for over 50 years and they range from awful to brilliant, with Greg at the brilliant end. Two things really stand out: Firstly he is great at picking up an individual's learning style. I always leave feeling I have learned 10% more than I was capable of. Secondly he takes the direction from the student. If you are stuck on something, you will leave the lesson feeling you are an expert in it! Very highly recommended." - Andrew M, Bass Student, Winchester

"Great instruction in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Good mix of theory and practical, always fun and interesting." - Simon B, Bass Student, North Baddesley

"I find Greg's lessons very motivating and I have learned to read music which I never expected!" -Andy J, Bass Student, West Meon

"Greg has a great wealth of knowledge alongside a wealth of experience in music. His lessons are well structured and fun. I've tried a lot of other teachers but Greg’s lessons have been better than the others. I would whole heartedly recommend Greg to anyone interested in learning bass guitar or double bass." - Marcus C, Bass Student, Southampton

"Greg really connects to his pupils and helps you with the real issues you have in playing the bass, hooking on other good stuff as you go. He is a very rare beast: a bass player who teaches bass, not a guitarist, so lessons are specific to your instrument. Highly recommended." - Andy M, bass player with The Fourfathers Band

"I can't say enough how much I've enjoyed the lessons. Every session I'm surprised by how it keeps getting more and more fun. We cover a wide range of styles and Greg never seems to get frustrated, even when I'm really struggling with a new piece or bit of theory. He's got a huge amount of experience both as a theorist and as a professional performer and this first hand knowledge adds even more depth to the lessons. I thought I knew what a good teacher would be like, but from the very first lesson Greg has surpassed this and continues to surprise me with newer, and usually harder, things to learn. I'm determined to get to grade 8 with him as my teacher and then keep on going from there!" - John C, Bass Student, Fair Oak

"Thanks for lesson today, really enjoyed it. Learned a great deal, but you showed me that my targets are reachable, with time. That means a great deal to me. Apart from that it was great fun. Look forward to our next lesson." - Geoff D, Bass Student, Berkshire
