About Me

About

I am a professional guitarist, teacher, performer and composer with over 13 years playing experience. I enjoy teaching all abilities from advanced players with specialised goals to absolute beginners. I plan my lessons to suit the student depending on what exactly it is that they want to achieve. The learning process will help students find new goals and ideas for what they want to learn next within the music. Whether it’s learning your favourite songs as a hobby, or preparation for graded exams and a serious career path, lessons should always be fun.

Outside of teaching guitar, bass and mandolin I play and compose in various original groups and professional function bands. Recent gigs with original projects include slots with Tears for Fears, John Etheridge, ABC and Bananarama.

I have most recently worked with Services For Education in Birmingham. Here I taught lessons in guitar, bass and whole class ukulele in multiple schools throughout the week. This work required me to really refine my lessons, planning and build the mental stamina to deliver valuable and appropriate lessons throughout the day.

In the summer of 2018, I taught instrument and band lessons at Camp Ballibay for the Performing Arts, Pennsylvania, USA (#1 arts camp in North America). Throughout my time there I was working with students of all backgrounds and abilities between the age of 8 and 16. I learnt to adapt my teaching approach to suit the needs of the individual.

From 2015 to 2018 I studied Jazz Performance at Leeds College of Music. During this time I played in many different groups and projects; writing and performing a wide range of genres in addition to jazz, including rock, metal, pop, blues, folk and funk. The experience has enabled me to appreciate and understand how to play and teach a whole variety of music.

  • RGT – Grade 8 Electric Guitar – Distinction

I have had a number of lessons with Lewis over the past few months of lockdown and his lessons are so enjoyable! He has a vast knowledge on the guitar and is so patient in teaching all the basics right through to advanced playing. I’ve come on leaps and bounds since learning with him! Thanks Lewis! Highly recommended!

I have had lessons with Lewis both face-to-face and online via Skype, and will have more in the future. His knowledge is comprehensive, his ability undeniable, his teaching style patient and down-to-earth. I have no hesitation in recommending him as a guitar instructor.

I can, without doubt, recommend Lewis as a guitar teacher. I wasn’t a complete beginner when we started and I had been toying with the idea of having lessons, half wondering if I could just keep teaching myself. However, I am astonished at the difference having a teacher like Lewis can make. Each week, I feel that I am making so much more progress than before. He is extremely patient and is able to give great advice that is tailored to my needs. He is fun to work with and has a fantastic work ethic. He has also learnt the songs that I want to play and always surprises me with his ability. I am pleased to have found such a great teacher.

“Having had 4 lessons now over a period of one month with Lewis I believe I am in a position to leave an informed review.

I have played the guitar for around 30 years and consider myself a competent singer/strummer. I’ve played in a medium to large church context week in week out through all that time. I was looking for a tutor to advance my skill set, particularly towards lead/solo styles. After the first couple of lessons had gone well, I decided that I would like to particularly focus on learning Jazz.

I am glad I found Lewis, he is a very knowledgeable and talented guitarist and has a great ability to share that. He is certainly able to pitch lessons to my level in such a way that I am learning and constantly being challenged. I find him patient and encouraging, good-natured and easy-going. I have definitely made progress and I can tell from Lewis’ instruction and playing that there is a great deal he can teach me.

I would have no hesitation recommending Lewis to guitarists of all abilities, beginners and old-hands alike.”
