YLO urgently needs a regular percussionist – can you help?

I’m the secretary for York Light Orchestra. We urgently need new regular percussionists, after ours had to retire on ill health grounds. Having already contacted most of the orchestras and concert bands in the area I am now approaching percussion teachers.

We are looking for anyone who would be willing to give it a go. No auditions.  There is no age limit but anyone under the age of 16 would need to be accompanied (to cover our child safeguarding policy). The music we play is around grade 4 standard and above but anyone who can follow music and keep a steady beat would be welcome.

We need a kit player for most of our pieces but would need the player to bring their own instruments as we don’t have access to any drums. However, YLO does own two timpani that are stored at Acomb with our music. Ideally we’d like more than one percussionist so they can share playing kit and timps.

This would suit anyone who wants a slightly different experience of percussion playing in a group. We play popular classical music, film themes and show music and occasionally pop. Currently in our programme is everything from William Tell to Strauss Emperor Waltz to Star Trek, Jurassic Park, James Bond, Les Miserables and Santana.

We rehearse on Thursday evenings at Acomb Methodist Church from 7.30-9.30pm. I would be grateful if you could circulate my contact details around anyone you think might be interested.

For more information about the orchestra, which celebrates its 70th anniversary later this year, please see our website York Light Orchestra

Thank you very much.

Kind regards

Karen – YLO Secretary
