Music trends of 2017 – Returning trends & new sounds

Man Playing Guitar

The glorious return of guitar indie!

2017 has seen the return of guitar bands by force! Although in 2016 there was the first glimpse of guitar bands shining through with the likes of Nothing But Thieves, Royal Blood and Wolf Alice getting big support from Radio 1, 2017 has brought them to the forefront! A lot of new guitar bands are coming through BBC introducing at the moment, exciting times!

Guitar music has taken somewhat of a back seat over the last 5 years but now its resurgence is well and truly under way. It’s going to be a big year for the likes of new bands Pink milk, Mosaic and Ikkarus.

Electronics and guitar mix has become the norm

Admittedly this has been the case for a number of years with The Killers having mixed synths and indie for years but last year with the release of 1975’s ‘I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it’, it feels like now, people don’t talk about electro/ indie as a style on its own. It is a part of indie now. Blossom’s are an indie bands, but scratch the surface and there’s a lot of synth work, the odd electronic drums popping in. The same can be said for the likes of Alt-J.

With new Indie/ Electronic bands Broken Islands, Amethysts & Hoshino coming through this is likely to become the norm in 2018, and long may it reign and become a developing style!

Electronic pop, not so cheesey anymore?

I remember a time, only 2 or 3 years ago when I wouldn’t dare say that I liked pop music. Pop was a dirty word. But in 2017 electronic pop has become COOL and acceptable, and I don’t feel embarrassed to admit it! With the success of Lorde, Clean Bandit and Julia Michaels, pop feels like it’s becoming edgey, not just reconstructed industry pop.

Grime keeps on growing!

Stormzy has been arguably the biggest act of the year. It feels like Grime is going to keep growing, what with Charlie Sloth’s new show the 8th, devoted to UK grime (and Charlie Sloth’s sense of humour) on Radio 1 and increasing coverage on all TV and radio.

There’s going to be a lot of new Grime artists coming through this year, keep and eye out for Kalada!

But some things never change – Ed is still Ed.

When Ed Sheeran’s new album dropped, he dominated the charts for weeks, and is still dominating now, will he get Xmas number 1?
